One of the biggest reasons why I chose to move to a more urban area is because I really am not the biggest fan of owning a car. Driving, yes. Owning a car and paying for insurance and taxes on something I don’t even use on a regular basis? No. I’ll pass!
Only downside of living la vida carless? Sometimes, I just want to make a quick run to do a Target haul, or take a short road trip with my friends.
I’ve heard of car share programs before, but I had yet to try one. The folks over at Enterprise CarShare< let me try out their program for a few days and boy oh boy — I’m incredibly impressed!
The process was super easy: I signed up for their CarShare membership, and after I was approved I could search all of the cars available in my area. Surprisingly, there was a car only a few blocks away from my apartment in Arlington. Through the app, I was able to book a car in advance and travel wherever I needed to go!
I’m a fan of CarShare because I can book the car for a couple of hours or a couple of days — there’s no need to go to a rental branch or storefront that might be super far away from your apartment. There are some really amazing places in the D.C. area that are great to head to with a car. Here are some of my favorite places to cruise to on a mini-D.C. road trip:
George Washington ParkwayI joke with everyone that this is my favorite road in all of Northern Virginia — but seriously, it’s stunning. There are several scenic outlooks along the route and also a few marinas you can head to. I also like stopping by Gravelly Point Park near the airport, you can see planes flying pretty low overhead, have a picnic, play soccer or just relax with friends!
Kline’s Freeze – Manassas, VAI grew up near Manassas and Klines is my absolute favorite place for ice cream in all of D.C. It’s a 45-minute drive trek outside of the city, but it’s completely worth it. After living here since 1995, I have yet to find a better ice cream spot!
National HarborOne of the biggest downsides about National Harbor is that there’s no metro even close to it! However, the casino, shops, restaurants and Tanger Outlets are all well worth the trip out to Maryland! If you’re in need of a day trip, try out National Harbor.
Butler’s OrchardThis is probably the cutest little farm I’ve ever been to in the D.C. area! There’s an amazing farmer’s market to pick up some amazing local produce, evening hayrides and bonfires, and in the fall, they have an incredible pumpkin patch.I can’t wait to book my next CarShare! The next time I need to either run errands in the city or go on a short day trip, you better believe I’m opting for Enterprise CarShare!
